Біографія

Народився у сім'ї садівника, змалку проявляв інтерес до ботаніки. У 1822 році влаштувався на роботу у ботанічний сад носити гаряче каміння у теплиці для нагрівання повітря. Згом став бригадиром теплиць. Разом з директором Віл'ямом Гукером займався переведенням саду з приватного у публічний. Галузь наукових інтересів Сміта — папороті. Коли він влаштувався на роботу сад мав 40 видів, а коли уходив на пенсію у колекції було 1084 папороті.
