Він отримав свій ступінь бакалавра в галузі управління живою природою і ступінь магістра по зоології в Університеті Аризони в 1962 і 1965 роках відповідно і докторський ступінь по зоології хребетних (вторинна спеціальність — палеонтологія) в Університеті Луїзіани в 1970 році. З 1958 по 1960 і з 1961 по 1962 р. він був польовим колекціонером в Мексиці. У 1972 році він був асистентом професора зоології в університеті штату Луїзіана, Батон-Руж, і з 1972 по 1973 рік він був помічником професора біології в Університеті Тулейна в Новому Орлеані. З 1973 року працював у Службі рибних ресурсів та дикої природи США як біолог-дослідник, розміщуючись в Національному музеї природної історії, Смітсонівський інститут. У 1996 році перевівся у Геологічну службу США, але залишається в музеї куратором Національної колекції північноамериканських ссавців і Національної колекції типових зразків ссавців. Він опублікував численні роботи, у співавторстві або сам. Досі у своїй кар'єрі він є автором або співавтором опису 2 нових родів і 14 видів сумчастих, кажанів і гризунів з Мексики і Південної Америки. Два гризунів його імені знаходяться в західній Амазонії (Бразилія і Перу).
