У школі в селі Рептон, Ішервуд зустрів Едварда Апварда, з яким товаришував усе життя. У співавторстві з ним він написав екстравагантні оповідання ''Мортмері'', одне з яких було опубліковане ще за життя письменника, ще декілька появились після смерті письменника, а решту він згрупував у ''Леви та Тіні''. Він навмисно завалив свої екзамени Тріпос та покинув Корпус Крісті Коледж, що в Кембриджі без вченого ступеня у 1925 році.
