Едіт Коулмен(англ. Edith Coleman; 1874—1951) — австралійська вчена, натураліст, ботанік, зробила важливі спостереження щодо синдрому запилення австралійських видів рослин[6].

Життєпис

Коулмен народилася 29 липня 1874 року у місті Вокінг, Суррей. У 1887 році вона разом із родиною емігрувала до Австралії та стала шкільною вчителькою[7]. У 1898 році одружилася із Джеймсом Коулменом, автолюбителем та засновником австралійського автомобільного клубу RACV, у них народилися дві дочки, Дороті та Гледіс.

11 вересня 1922 року Коулмен стала членом товариства Field Naturalists Club of Victoria[8]. Вона опублікувала понад 350 популярних та наукових статей, зробила значний науковий внесок у вивчення багатьох австралійських видів, включаючи орхідеї, омели, павуків, комах, птахів і риб, а також роботи з садівництва та історії.

Знакова робота Коулмен про псевдокопуляцію орхідей розкрила давню таємницю запилення орхідей[9], яка спантеличила багатьох, у тому числі Чарльза Дарвіна. Її робота продемонструвала, що замість того, щоб виробляти нектар для приваблення запилювачів, деякі види орхідей імітували самок ос за допомогою запаху, візуальних та тактильних сигналів настільки ефективно, що самці ос переважно сприймали квіти як самок та запилювали орхідеї. Її роботу перевидав на міжнародному рівні оксфордський біолог Едвард Бегнол Пультон[10] та визнав ентомолог з Гарварду Оукс Еймс[11].

Померла 3 червня 1951 року в Сорренто, штат Вікторія[12].

Нагороди та почесті

У 1949 році Коулмен була нагороджена Медаль Австралійського природознавства [13].

Орхідея Prasophyllum colemaniae названа на її честь та на честь її доньок[14].
