Александер Френк Скатч

Александер Френк Скатч (англ. Alexander Frank Skutch, 1904-2004) — американський натураліст і письменник. Він опублікував численні наукові праці та книги про птахів та декілька книг з філософії. В орнітології він особливо запам'ятався своєю піонерською роботою над помічниками в гнізді (соціальна структура у птахів, в якій неповнолітні та статевозрілі молоді птахи однієї або обох статей залишаються у зв'язку зі своїми батьками та допомагають їм вирощувати наступні покоління).

Біографія

Олександр Скатч народився 20 травня 1904 року в Балтиморі у штаті Меріленд[6]. Він отримав ступінь доктора ботаніки в Університеті Джона Хопкінса в 1928 році. Потім він влаштувався на роботу в United Fruit Company, яка мала проблему з хворобами бананів, для боротьби з якою їй знадобився досвід ботаніка. Скатч працював у Гватемалі, Панамі та Гондурасі. За цей час він полюбив тропіки, а також зацікавився птахами. Він почав вивчати їхні звички.

У 1941 році Скатч придбав ферму в Коста-Риці.[7][8] У 1950 році одружився з Памелою, дочкою австралійського ботаніка Чарльза Х. Ланкестера. Скатч з дружиною та її сином жили на фермі. Він був вегетаріанцем, вирощував кукурудзу, юку та інші культури, а до 1990-х років без проточної води купався і пив з найближчого струмка.

Скатч написав понад 40 книг і понад 200 статей з орнітології, віддаючи перевагу описовому стилю, уникаючи статистичних даних. Він помер за вісім днів до свого 100-річчя, в тому ж році, коли отримав Дослідницьку премію Лой та Олдена Міллерів.[9]
