Історичний ареал
Вид був ендеміком Південного острова у Новій Зеландії. Мешкав у вологих гірських лісах на північному заході острова. Інший представник роду, Pachyornis elephantopus мешкав у сухіших та тепліших низовинних лісах, тому обидва види не конкурували між собою.
Опис
Вага тіла — до 72 кг. Він був схожим на Pachyornis elephantopus, але дрібнішим за розміром.
Вимирання
Вид виник у кінці плейстоцену та вимер після появи на острові людей. У 2012 році зроблено радіовуглецевий аналіз решток з печери Булмер, який показав, що птах загинув між 1396 і 1442 роками нашої ери.
